Congratulations !
On Monday 2 October, Prof Katalin Karikó and Prof Drew Weissman (University of Pennsylvania, USA) were both awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their pioneering work demonstrating the importance of nucleoside base modifications on mRNAs.
These modified mRNAs have been used in mRNA vaccines against COVID-19″. For more details, see https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/medicine/2023/press-release/. On 19 January 2022, the SFNano Scientific Committee decided to publish an article in tribute to Professor Katalin Karikó’s passion and perseverance. These great scientists have just taught us how dedication and passion for science have led to new developments despite the sceptical attitude to ideas that they have had to face. The success of these vaccines has been a breath of fresh air in the fields of therapeutic nucleic acids and nanomedicine. Several large-scale projects are underway in different countries, and we will surely reap the rewards of this research in the years to come.
